Wedding Workshop at Forum Homini

Back in January when I heard there was going to be a workshop given by Andrea Carlyle and Dror Eyal, my first words were “Heck yes!” These two are giants in the wedding photography industry, and a chance to learn from them wasn’t something I was about to pass up! The workshop was held at the fabulous Forum Homini in the Cradle of Humankind (PS – will somebody please go and get married there, and hire me to be your photographer? Thanks. ) We shot around the hotel for a bit, and then took our cars out into the nature reserve, where we fought off mosquitoes bravely. Thanks to our models, Gen and Greg, for being superstars and standing anywhere we wanted them! And thanks to Dror and Andrea for sharing your knowledge and secrets with us! I could have stayed another whole day, asking questions and learning.

Wedding at Turbine Hall, Newtown: Kate & Rupert

When Kate first contacted me about her wedding, I was sold on one word: Newtown. Not only was Turbine Hall an amazing venue that completely suited Kate and Rupert’s style, but theirs was also the first wedding ever held there! I never thought I’d be able to say I was the first photographer to shoot a wedding at a new venue so early in my career. So I was thrilled that Kate and Rupert asked me to be a part of it. Congratulations, you two! Your wedding was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Isn’t this the most amazing location for a wedding venue?

Kate’s dress was so simple and elegant, but the black sash really gave it some WOW factor.

Getting her hair done in the midst of the “Ohmigosh it’s actually ME getting married today!” realisation. Those tend to hit periodically throughout the day.

Being an informal affair, the wedding party and family all walked together across the second floor bridge in Turbine Hall to reach the ceremony area. The sun was in just the right position for me to get this amazing flare.

We only had about fifteen minutes for our creative bridal portraits, but because Kate and Rupert didn’t have an engagement shoot, we’re going to go back to Newtown and do an uber-fabulous Trash the Dress session in a few weeks! Oooh.

Invitation to the Wedding

I love it when my couples give me an invitation to their wedding. It’s like a little extra piece of the wedding I can get excited over, and photograph! I love seeing the different styles and ideas that people come up with, too. There’s no limit to the fun you ca have with your invites!

When I did Jade and Craig’s engagement shoot, they gave me this gorgeous felt hand-crafted invitation, which went so well with their heart-themed, laidback wedding.

And on Monday when I met up with Kate, my bride for tomorrow’s wedding (which, by the way, is going to blow your socks away ) she gave me their elegant black and white invitation in a fun red envelope. I love the way I can just see the style of their wedding in it!

Sarah & Adrian’s Wedding

Sarah and Adrian got married at the Vaal last Saturday, and I was invited to second shoot by Hannalee Photography. If you live in Gauteng you might remember that that was the weekend of violent storms and flooding (I even got trapped by a flooded intersection on Republic Road near Cresta on the Friday night!), and the Vaal was, well, a lot wider than it should have been. Sarah and Adrian had to rethink their plans of getting married on the banks under the trees, or we would all have needed wetsuits and snorkels! But Sarah and Adrian didn’t let that worry them; the ceremony was moved upshore and they just got on with the most important thing – being happy and in love and getting married! Here are some of my photos from their wedding.

Yes, she had the most gorgeous satin blue heels. I swooned. Then I took a thousand photos.

Behind the Scenes of the February Issue of Splendid Affairs Magazine

And if that title isn’t self-explanatory, I don’t know what is. Last week I got together with Eve of Splendid Affairs, Sam from Lashline, and two beautiful girls, Cat and Zindre, at the AMAZING Shepstone Gardens, and photographed the heck out of over a dozen gorgeous wedding dresses. I was in my element with all the different styles and hairdos, not to mention the seventeen million places you can photograph at Shepstone Gardens.

The magazine will be out in early February, but here’s a look at some of what went on behind the scenes:

Just a sneak peek of goodness to come. It was threatening rain the entire day, and in fact it did come down while the make-up was being done, but then it kindly let up for us to do our thing. This isn’t the first time that’s happened to me at Shepstone. There must be a kind of magic there.

Desiree & Warren

I’m just finishing editing Mel & Graeme’s wedding, and I found these two pictures that just sum up the feel of the wedding for me. Sitting at the reception after the ceremony, listening to the fabulous African jazz band, just feeling the happiness pervading the crowd, and the love Mel and Graeme have for each other and for everyone there, I just felt so chilled and happy, even though I was technically working.

Another wedding at home that could blow venue weddings out of the water! Jade and Craig (remember them from their fun and fantastic engagement shoot?) got married at Jade’s father’s house in Houghton. The ceremony was in the garden on the edge of the hill, overlooking the city, and the marquee for the reception was filled with white lanterns and hanging hearts. So gorgeous! Rain was threatening the whole day, but although it apparently poured in the south of Johannesburg and north of Houghton, we stayed dry. We did the couple shoot at Roedean School, and had so much fun! Jade and Craig, thank you for being so sweet, wonderful, fun and in love (oh, and for being willing to do anything I asked!).

It takes a village to dress a bride…

Oh, Jade – are you kidding me with that gorgeousness?

The evening ended with a surprise from Jade’s father: paper lanterns for everyone to make a wish on and float into the sky. Definitely one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen at a wedding.

Jade and Craig, it was an honour to shoot your wedding. May your future be filled with all the joy you deserve!

Shiny New Digital Wedding Magazine!

Remember The Secret I couldn’t reveal? I’m sorry I kept you all in suspense for so long, but the time is finally here! I’ve been involved with the release of a brand new online wedding magazine, aimed at helping South African brides with all the inspiration and information they need to plan their wedding.

I took lots of the photos, and I particularly love the shoot we did at Toadbury Hall with the gorgeous dresses from Honey Boutique – see pages 20 to 31!

Mel & Graeme’s homegrown wedding

If you think there’s not much you can do to make a wedding at your house beautiful and personal, think again. I fell in love with the little details Mel & Graeme thought up – from the little chandeliers hanging over the carport, to the petal-strewn driveway, to the lanterns inside the marquee, to the heart-shaped rose-filled wire ornaments…I could go on for ages!

Or I could just let the photos speak for themselves.

Mel’s blue-grey vintage-inspired wedding dress was designed by the fabulous Abigail Betz.

She wore shoes she already owned…and why not, when they’re this pretty?

Her birdcage veil with feathery-rosey yumminess was also designed by Abigail Betz.

Mel and Graeme did a First Look before their ceremony. I set Graeme up under the gazebo and had Mel walk out to meet him. I think his face says it all.

Graeme’s two sons stood beside the couple as they made their vows and became a family. I love the expression on 9-year-old Nicholas’ face in this one.

I love everyone clapping as Mel and Graeme were pronounced husband and wife.

…the perfect end to a perfect wedding. Mel and Graeme, I hope you love your photos as much as I loved your wedding.

Riette & Wouter’s Wedding at Shepstone Gardens

Riette and Wouter chose what turned out to be the hottest day of the year for their wedding at the beautiful Shepstone Gardens. Not that they seemed to mind, although I do recall glasses of champagne and juice appearing constantly. I know I drank more water than I probably ever have in one day. And it was completely worth it!

When I told Jade and Craig to be ready at 7:30am it sounded like a good idea. Nice and early, to miss the heat of the day…little did we know we’d picked one of the hottest days of the year! We sweated, fought off flies and I came out looking like a boiled lobster, but somehow Jade and Craig managed to look effortlessly cool in their photos anyway. I love what we got – I can’t wait for your wedding next month, guys!

If you were in Johannesburg last night, you probably saw the amazing golden and pink sunset (I wasn’t able to get a photo of it, because we only saw it after we’d left the house and I didn’t take my camera. Boo). But my south-facing view, over town, had THIS:

Anniversary in the Drakensberg part II

After the day of mist and fog, we woke up on Saturday with the sun shining valiantly through the clouds. Excellent hiking weather; climbing a mountain in the blazing sun isn’t my idea of fun, especially since I am so pale I’m practically translucent, and I burn if I just look at the sun.

Aargh, LOOK at it. So fantastically beautiful!

Yep, the clouds were coming out in full force. But soon we were in a foresty bit and didn’t notice…

And then we turned a corner and saw THIS:

Now, a series with a donkey, just because I can.

I call this first one, “You Shall Not Pass.”

“No, seriously, I’m guarding this path.”

“Oh, all right. Not that it matters.” (he’s such an Eeyore)

I thought this guy was totally adorable. And I felt so bad for him because he was just covered in flies.

So naturally I decided he needed a nose rub to get rid of those pesky flies. Equally naturally, he decided to eat my jacket (don’t worry, no harm done).

I had my husband take these. Look at us, friends forever!

Or at least until we walked away and left him standing there looking depressed. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

I’ll leave you with these two, taken just on the outskirts of the Berg:

Anniversary in the Drakensberg

I love the Drakensberg. And I particularly loved the weather we had while we were there, because it combined two of my favourite things: pretty vistas and clouds. Oh boy, do I love clouds. I could have an affair with them. Well, you’ll see.

These next two were taken the evening we arrived. The clouds were just beginning to break, and we had high hopes for good hiking weather the following day. The rainbow photo in my last past was also taken at this time.

Well, this was the next day. We couldn’t even SEE the mountains, let alone hike in them. I did get some lovely misty horse shots, though.

The next day it actually did lighten up, though. More to come – I’m trying not to make my posts too picture-heavy so that they can load for people with slow connections, like my parents.

Christine Meintjes Workshop Part II

This shoot was so adorable I could eat it up with a big bowl of custard. And I suppose Nicola and Wynand were a bit of help too

Ree over at The Pioneer Woman* is holding a reader competition for textured photos. Textures are fabulously fun to play with! Sometimes a fairly ordinary photo just needs a little bit of texture and depth to make it go WOW. And sometimes it’s fun to create an old, vintage look with the texture of old paper or wood – or anything that comes to mind!

Those of you who are planning a wedding in Johannesburg at the moment might be aware of the “Rock around the Cradle” event that was held this past Saturday. Five of the big wedding venues in the Cradle of Humankind area (Toadbury Hall, The Moon & Sixpence, Casalinga, Oakfield Farm and Avianto) got together and had a weekend viewing for prospective to-be-marrieds looking for a venue. I was asked by Eve of Splendid Affairs to come and photograph the tables she’d designed for Toadbury Hall. Here are some of them!

Christine Meintjes workshop Part I

The weekend in Cape Town was fabulous. I learned so much about not only photography, but about running a wedding photography business as well. I have to give a huge thank you to to Christine Meintjes for organising, teaching, sharing and just generally being awesome, and to the other seven photographers I met for sharing your knowledge and experiences as well.

Early on the Saturday morning we drove out to Stellenbosch to photograph Nicola and Wynand’s sweet, country-chic engagement shoot. The weather was perfect, as was the location!

I’m leaving tomorrow morning for a weekend of learning and photography in Cape Town! What could be more fabulous? Well, for one, it’s being hosted by this talented lady. If I can learn just one thing from her I’ll be thrilled!

Trash the Dress in Johannesburg Part III

The third and final part of my Trash the Dress with Louise! We started doing some trespassing here too, but to get into the first place the security guards made me phone the owner and ask his permission. They caught us slipping through the fence. Heheh.

Then we tried to get into the old Gasworks in Brixton. There we got stopped by a strange old man who gave us a huge lecture on how it was forbidden to go in there, but he was still going to let us, but if we fell through to the centre of the earth or stood on toxic waste that ate through our shoes it would be our faults. Um. We just stood outside in the end. We didn’t even find any of the blackjacks he warned us about; in fact, he seemed more concerned about the blackjacks than the toxic waste and alleged holes to the centre of the earth!

Well, we had a fantastic time. Louise was fantastic and sat anywhere and lay anywhere I wanted her to. I’m sure it wasn’t exactly kosher on the ground next to the one pillar, but we made it look fab! Thanks to my friend Debi for coming along to shoot and to my hubby for playing bodyguard and carrying towels and veils and balloons! (Balloons, you ask? Next post! There are so many gorgeous shots I couldn’t narrow them down to one!)

I’m pretty excited because next week I am going to Trash The Dress! No, not mine. Someone else’s. But I’m going to be shooting it, which is much more interesting

I’ve loved the concept of Trash the Dress for a couple of years now, but this will be my first time doing it! And before you all get freaked out, we’re not actually going to TRASH her dress. We might just dirty it up a little. But no setting on fire or paintball sessions for us! It’s more about getting to wear your dress in a less “weddingy” environment and having fun with it, instead of worrying about getting it messed up. At least, that’s how Trash The Dress works in my mind.

I’d love to do this next one, but Johannesburg isn’t really conducive to this type of shot. Plus we’re not going to be out after dark. And much as I’d like to be able to guarantee rain, I’m not that good.

Now find me an awesome old derelict building, and I’m THERE. There’s something so beautiful about the contrast of the soft white dress, which symbolises new beginnings, against the dirty, run-down ruin, whose life and purpose is over.

I amused myself yesterday by going through all my random photos and sorting them out properly. And when I say “amused”, I mean “highly necessary because I didn’t know where anything was”. I ended up finding I had a few hundred shots of the other man in my life.

Over the weekend I attended a workshop hosted by Jaco Fourie of J&D Photography. Driving from Johannesburg to Pretoria was a bit wearing, but completely worth it as I learnt all sorts of things about video lighting and off camera flash and posing, as well as the best way to make pigeons take flight and that bananas are ridiculously expensive when bought from a vendor’s cart in Church Square.

Well, it’s midwinter, and it’s cold and dry. Which means I’ve been snuggling up with a heater, blanket and warm cat while I go through my worryingly large photo collection. Fashion Week

So it was SA Fashion Week at the Sandton Convention Centre last week. Normally these things just pass me by, because – well, let’s just say that I’m more about comfy clothes than cutting edge ones. Although I love dressing-up for an important occasion as much as the next girl, if I had to think about what to wear every single day I’d probably go mad. And break an ankle in those stilettos that seem to be so popular.

This time, however, I was asked by the folks at Stylescoop magazine to attend some of the shows and take pictures. Now that sounds more like me! So off I went. Here are some of the photos I got.
